Get to Know Dr. Lockhart
We’re excited to welcome Dr. Carey Lockhart to Child Neurology & Consultants of Austin (CN&CA) as our newest child neurology and sleep medicine specialist. As the physician leading our Sleep Center, Dr. Lockhart brings specialized expertise in both child neurology and sleep medicine, with a particular focus on children and adolescents with complex sleep disorders.
Dr. Lockhart cares for patients with a wide range of sleep concerns, including sleep-disordered breathing, parasomnias, insomnia, and disorders of excessive daytime sleepiness. She has a special interest in central disorders of hypersomnia, including narcolepsy, and is passionate about helping families understand how sleep can affect a patient’s health, development, learning, and everyday life.
We sat down with Dr. Lockhart to learn more about her areas of expertise, her approach to caring for families, and what she hopes to bring to the CN&CA community.
What are your areas of expertise?
Pediatric neurology and sleep medicine. Although I see all pediatric sleep disorders, I specialize in central disorders of hypersomnia like narcolepsy
Do you speak any other languages?
I wish! I’m learning Spanish on Duolingo 🙂
Why are you excited to join CN&CA?
I am excited to join CN&CA because it offers the opportunity to practice pediatric neurology and sleep medicine in a more patient-centered, relationship-driven environment. The smaller practice setting allows for more flexibility, collaboration, and innovation in how we care for patients. I’m especially looking forward to expanding access to pediatric sleep medicine. In addition, what really stood out to me about this group is not only that focus, but also the people. I was incredibly impressed by how collaborative, thoughtful, and genuinely patient-focused everyone is. I’m excited to be part of a team that shares those values and to build meaningful relationships with both colleagues and families.
Why are you passionate about what you do?
I have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a child’s life at a really critical stage of development. Neurologic and sleep conditions can affect everything—learning, behavior, mood, and overall well-being. When a child isn’t sleeping well, it affects their entire family, school performance, behavior, even emotional health. When you help a child sleep better or manage their symptoms, you’re not just treating a condition, you’re helping them function, grow, and thrive. That impact, both for the child and the family, is incredibly motivating and rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about working with children?
What I enjoy most about working with children is building relationships not just with the child, but with the entire family. Kids bring a unique energy and honesty to each visit, and I love being able to help them feel comfortable and understood. It’s especially meaningful to support parents through what can be a stressful time and help them feel confident in their child’s care.
What do you want patients to know about you outside of the clinical setting?
I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors, whether it’s snow skiing in the winter or enjoying water sports in the summer. I also love traveling and make it a goal to visit a new country each year, which has been an incredible way to experience different cultures and perspectives. Closer to home, I enjoy wine tasting, listening to podcasts, and game nights with my family or friends. I have a busy and fun household with a blended family of six children, ranging in age from 18 to 7, which keeps life full and lively. A fun fact about me is that while I love adventure, I’m surprisingly squeamish when it comes to eyeballs. This is something my kids are well aware of and never hesitate to tease me about.
What are you most excited to do now that you live in Austin?
I’m really excited about the outdoor lifestyle and energy of Austin. I love being active, so having access to hiking, water activities, and being outside year-round is something I’m really looking forward to. I’m also excited about the culture; live music, great food, and just the overall vibe of the city.
What is your favorite way to recharge after a long day?
Honestly, it’s a mix of family time, a good podcast, and maybe a board game with the kids. Simple, but it works every time.
If you weren’t a physician, what would you be doing?
If I weren’t a physician, I think I’d be an interior designer or a realtor. I’ve always been a little obsessed with homes—I love everything from layout and design to imagining how a space can be transformed.
