Autism and the Research on Leucovorin and Acetaminophen: Clear Answers for Families
Why are people talking about this?
Recently, there has been a lot of attention on autism and possible links with certain medicines and vitamins, including leucovorin (folinic acid) and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Families may be hearing mixed messages in the news or online and want clear, trustworthy answers.
At Child Neurology & Consultants of Austin (CN&CA), we stay up to date with the latest research and evidence-based guidelines. We believe in working with families to find the best possible care for each child. Our vision is to help every child become their best self.
1. Can leucovorin (folinic acid) help children with autism?
Some families have been asking us about a vitamin called leucovorin. This is because recent news stories have talked about previous research studies and possible benefits. Some research studies have suggested that it may help with communication. The benefits may only apply to people that have problems with the proper functioning of folate receptors. It is usually safe, and side effects are rare. Families should know this is not a “cure” for autism, but it may be helpful for certain children.
2. Does taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) in pregnancy cause autism or ADHD?
No. Doctors still recommend acetaminophen as the first choice for pain or fever during pregnancy when it’s needed. Some studies found small links to autism or ADHD, but when better research methods were used, the risk disappeared or was extremely small. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Research does not show a causal link between acetaminophen use in children and autism. Similarly, studies have found no significant or confirmed associations between use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and children’s risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.”
3. What do medical experts say overall?
Experts agree that leucovorin may help some children with autism who have folate-related issues, but it is not a cure. Current medical advice is that acetaminophen is safe to use during pregnancy when needed for pain or fever.
