Our Doctors are Going to Summer Camp!

by ih-chi admin

Kids aren’t the only ones who get excited about summer camp. Some of our very own physicians have been eagerly gathering gear in anticipation of their work at a few Texas camps for special needs children and teenagers.

Dr. Michael Reardon is at the MDA Camp for All (June 2-7) in scenic Burton, Texas. This camp is designed for kids with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders. MDA Camp for All provides kids the freedom to enjoy typical summer camp activities in a safe setting with medical care on site. This camp experience also helps them gain independence away from their primary caregivers and gives their caregivers – usually parents – a much-needed summer break as well. Campers participate in swimming, horseback riding, dancing, and zip-lining, and get to know others who share similar physical challenges.

This is Dr. Reardon’s tenth time at MDA Camp for All. He’s excited to return for another summer.

Dr. Kate Labiner is later working at Camp Brainstorm (June 17-21) on the coast in Rockport. This is Dr. Labiner's first time at Camp Brainstorm, but she has worked at several other epilepsy camps in Texas, Arizona, and Hawaii. Camp Brainstorm is organized for kids with epilepsy where they can enjoy all the activities of a regular camp—swimming, boating, archery – in a safe environment and will be cared for should a serious seizure strike.

“This will be my first time at Camp Brainstorm,” says Dr. Labiner. “I can’t wait to watch the pure joy on these kids’ faces as they experience the great outdoors and physical freedoms of summer camp.”

She will be a member of the expert care team made up of pediatric neurologists, nurses, and trained counselors who will be looking after campers during their stay.

Both camps are offered free of charge for kids who meet the criteria. For more information on summer camps for special needs children and teenagers, visit Child Neurology Consultants’ patient resources here.
