Update on Epilepsy

A new report from the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) shows more Americans are living with epilepsy than ever before. The number of adults currently affected by epilepsy increased from 3 million to 3.4 million from 2010 to 2015. Children’s cases rose also, from 450,000 in 2007 to 470,000 in 2015.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition affecting the central nervous system that triggers frequent, and often debilitating, seizures in those who suffer from it.

It isn’t clear why the numbers increased although possible reasons include the country’s ongoing population growth, as well as greater awareness about the condition leading to more diagnoses.

With such a large number suffering from this condition, it’s important for everyone to be able to recognize the signs of a seizure and know how to help the person experiencing it.

Here’s a reminder on what to do if a child who you are with has a seizure.
